Quickstart Guide to Music Improv

Thinking about trying music improv? Love improv and want to see what else it can offer you? Any and all reasons and levels welcome to this baseline skills course.

We will help you develop:

• The confidence to sing in a group
• The skills to create simple and supportive choruses
• Scenework into songwork
• Scene pictures in group song numbers

Try out your new skills in a group montage at the end of class. This class is a good starting point for new singers and improvisers as well as a touchpoint for those who want to improve their music improv skills with a little practice.

David Yontz, is an experienced accompanist, sound designer and composer for Chicago-based sketch and improv productions since 2013. Some of his career highlights include winning the 2015 and 2019 DCASE Individual Artist Prize, and serving as an on-call understudy for the Second City’s 109th and 110th Mainstage revues in 2021-2023. He is the co-creator of iO’s Voila: The Improvised musical and regularly provides musical direction for this show and many others at iO.
