Performers

Baby Steps

Tara Sytsma and Bannon Backhus are Baby Steps. With our hand-shucked approach to comedy, there are a lot of ways we can make you laugh–for example, unintentionally–and if you really like character and story, you’ll really like this duo. Now, baby steps to the theatre…

Blunder Bus

All aboard for Blunder Bus! Honk Honk This Kalamazoo-based group performs a medley of short and long form improv to celebrate the comedy of everyday life, blending grounded moments with quirky twists. Some of their signature shows include It’s a Blunderful Life, L is for the Way You Laugh With Me, School’s Out, & Blunder Bus From Hell.

Breaking The News

Our cracked news team will be skewering the local, national and global news stories of the day…but at NIGHT!

During this fast-paced, high-stakes show, you’ll pick the headlines, and our mainstage comedians will improvise their way through some investigative retorting.

Canned Champagne

Described as “an eclectic group of improv-ers…a variety pack, if you will,” Canned Champagne is classy, yet down to earth; effervescent, yet digestible; bursting with flavor, yet sturdy in their aluminum casing. Graduates of the Crawlspace Comedy Theatre improv program, this group is ready to have fun and get silly!

Crawlspace Eviction

Crawlspace Eviction

Since 2003, Crawlspace Eviction has been delivering laughs, chortles and guffaws to Kalamazoo.

What happens when what’s next is ANYBODY’s idea? Get ready for a side-splitting, fun time!

Daddy’s Boys

Bryce and Pete, the inseparable duo, share not just a stage but a lifetime of laughter. United by blood, these brothers bring a unique flavor to the world of improv, drawing from the shared experiences of growing up together. Born from the same daddy, their bond is the secret ingredient that makes their performances a heartwarming and sidesplitting experience.

Denim Darlings

The Denim Darlings are a Grand Rapids based ‘female forward’ improv group. Their shows are like one big slumber party, with an act rooted in Y2K nostalgia and on and off stage friendship. Referred to at least once as the ‘hottest improv group in GR’, The Denim Darlings have performed at Comedy Outlet Mondays, Ala Carte Comedy Show at Founders Brewing, GRIF, Lass Laugh Festival, and the Untitled Improv show in Traverse City. When not doing improv, you can find them singing at Karaoke around West MI.

The Dispatch

Just when you thought you were safe, The Dispatch gets…ummm…DISPATCHED! This is your chance to see some of the rising improv and sketch comedians in the Midwest strut their stuff! The Dispatch is The Comedy Project’s “house team” out of Grand Rapids.

Improvised Golden Age of Radio

Veterans of Chicago’s best improv shows like Baby Wants Candy, Improvised Shakespeare Company, Hitch Cocktails and more bring you an hour of hilarious long form improv.

Before man’s attention was captured by Cellular Telephones, Computer Machines, and of course the Humble Television, the airwaves were ruled by the king of communication: The Radio. These productions were put on by crews working countless hours, from writing meticulous scripts and planning complex scenes to rehearsing until each moment was perfect.

We’ve done none of that.

Join us to see a rotating cast of veteran Chicago improvisers immerse the audience in a live broadcast of an Old Time Radio show inspired by classic tropes and suggestions from the audience..

Joyce II Men

Joyce II Men is a Kalamazoo-based improv comedy troupe founded in 2019. Besides the Crawlspace, some of their favorite performance venues have been a nursing home, a dog park, and a haunted cornfield. Known for their quick wit, ability to think on their feet, and their willingness to take risks, they also tend towards bouts of poor judgment, leading to hilarious results.

Nolen & Nolen

They have performed with numerous troupes & theaters including Preponderate & Noble Fool (Chicago), Boom Chicago (Amsterdam), Pretty Please & Furious Theatre (Los Angeles) as well as being co-founders of the Arcade Comedy Theater (Pittsburgh). Additionally, they have performed and taught at numerous improv festivals across the country.
They now live in Canton, Michigan and teach and perform regularly at Go Comedy, Planet Ant and HearSay Theater.

Oh Hey!

Tanja Rowland (Family Secret) and Sara Fish (Small Victories) join forces as the delicious duo, Oh Hey!

Phony Award Winning Musical

In the spring of 2023, Laura Hall (Music Director from WHOSE LINE IS IT ANYWAY) and Lisa McQueen (Music Director at SECOND CITY) came up with the idea for a music improv form where actors improvise specific Broadway musicals. We have a weekly slot at iO Theater in Chicago and have performed improvised LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, COMPANY, GUYS & DOLLS, CHICAGO, CHORUS LINE and WICKED. Our cast are the best musical improvisers in Chicago.

Piebenga Plumbing

Piebenga Plumbing returns to Crawlspace Comedy. This brother duo comprises Scott Piebenga of Devil’s Daughter (who just performed at Kalamazoo Improv Fest) and his Brother Mark Piebenga (who has been a long-time performer and teacher at Second City Chicago.)

Pop Scholars

Returning to to the Kalamazoo Improv Fest stage are fest faves Pop Scholars!

This team is “wicked smart and stupid funny”!

Seriously, they’re super smart….and you’ll laugh a ton!

Rapid Fire

Rapid Fire Improv runs a form called Fiction Town where we create an entire interconnected fictional town, full of intersecting lives and characters to make you feel like you’re visiting some Americana someplace you’ve never been.

Blue Text Bubbles

Blue Text Bubbles is a group chat turned improv comedy team that spills their juiciest convos onstage. We’re a group of friends that stay busy performing our signature form (The Sneaky Link) around Chicago (Second City, iO Theater, Bughouse, etc.). God forbid we actually like each other!

We’re excited to feature Jo Belangia, Maya Arroyo, Dylan Coakley, and Molly Olson at our Kalamazoo Improv Fest debut!

TBD Improv Trio

Veteran improvisors Tom Blandford, Bryan Day, & Dann Sytsma invite the audience to go forward alongside them, with everyone’s imaginations boldly intertwined as they dive, karate, dance, scream, love, weep and laugh their way into the characters and situations of this unscripted show. Aside from that, everything else is simply TBD.

Tuesday Goodies

The Tuesday Goodies are a Chicago-based improv ensemble made up of iO and CIC Theater alumni. Aptly named after the free weekly variety show they host—Tuesday Good Show at the Gallery Cabaret in Bucktown—the Goodies bring high-energy, character-driven storytelling to the stage. Their improv blends sharp instincts, fearless play, and a cinematic narrative style, weaving dynamic worlds that move like a movie: fast, funny, and full of surprises. Featuring Kelly Foy, Nick Bonsignore, Keller Paulson, and Jay Williams, the Tuesday Goodies aren’t just good improvisers—they’re even better friends.

Voila

Following the reopening of the world famous iO Theater Chicago, Sarah Shockey and David Yontz set out to create the theater’s flagship improvised musical Harold. In 2023 they brought along Cory Hardin as a co-producer.

Voila! has performed at iO Fest, Kalamazoo Improv Fest, Wheel Of Improv (Second City) and performs every Friday at 10PM.

What Sharp Teeth

What Sharp Teeth, an all-women/femme team, will sink their teeth into your funny bone with their unique blend of realistic and absurd comedy. Get ready for a night of laughter that’s both bubbly and biting!
